China Blue / The Strive for the Perfect Wardrobe

I bought this skort months ago after being the lucky winner of a £150 gift card to spend at River Island, and this is the first time i've finally worn it. I didn't want to waste it on a simple black or white top, so I waited until the perfect blue pairing cropped up and luckily for me, this wonderful New Look boxy tee landed in my life and they are perrrrrfect together.

The wardrobe 're-vamp'

Re-vamping my wardrobe is a life-long thing for me and i've been at it for years already. Anytime I get new clothes, be it buying them, being given them, generally accumulating them - it's always a task that I take serious thought in to.
I've been obsessed with the whole 'capsule' idea since I was young and watched 'How To Look Good Naked', i'm sure you all remember Gok Wan banging on about the importance and brilliance of a capsule wardrobe, and he's definitely onto something there.
Since then, whenever i've bought something, I have to really need it (or my wardrobe has to really need it) and unless I can style it in my mind with multiple items in my wardrobe before hitting checkout, I don't get it.
We all buy all these pretty things because we like them, but how many of you (and how many times) have got home after picking up lust-worthy items, hung them in your wardrobe and completely forgotten about them because they're just totally impractical or go with absolutely nothing you already own? It's a 'first world problem' for sure.
I'm quite sensible these days (thanks to my very financially-tight mother, whose trait has apparently slightly rubbed off on me!) so if I don't need it I don't buy it, and I think that's a trait so many others need to learn.
Having the perfect wardrobe isn't necessarily about beautiful individual pieces (especially ones that you will never do anything with), but creating your own perfect capsule. Buying versatile items will guarantee you a fair few different outfits in itself, and creating your perfect capsule allows you to never be that dreaded 'outfit repeater' - and personally, re-working old things in your closet is just as exciting (sort of) as buying new, especially pieces that you really love!
Long story short, that's what the blue top was about for me when I picked it up.... I baffled slightly....

THE SUMMER EDIT: THE FORMAL OCCASION

Dress - c/o Jones and Jones (here)
Bag - Biba, c/o House of Fraser
Shoes - Jeffrey Campbell
Sunnies - Oasap (here)

So it's finally summer, and the wedding and race season is now upon us... but what do we wear? If you're anything like me, you'll still have a bit of tub from the winter hibernation period and all of those sinful Domino's from your previous deadlines, so going out is such an inconvenience when you're too lazy to go to the gym to wear anything nice (screw you, bodycon).......
My previous housemate (who is still my wonderfully brilliant friend Rachel and one of my dearest!) had this dress in black quite some time ago when Jones and Jones first got their concession at Topshop (it was known in our household as 'the lampshade dress' due to it's voluminous skater skirt) and it was very much the go-to for all occasions that were remotely formal, so when Jones and Jones contacted me - I knew which dress I wanted right away (i'm slightly more colourful than Rachel is...).
It's very much everything I was missing from my wardrobe, especially with the Derby coming up in Epsom and me owning nothing of the sort to even go in - not to mention, it covers up my tummy so I can eat pizza all day - yay!

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY - 20 facts

It's officially been a year this month since I started 'The Fashion Wonderland' and turned my illustration blog into this whole personal style shenanigans, and it's been a fabulous year meeting you all online and in real life, and finding something that I really love has been really fulfilling - so I figured a great way to 'mark' this first anniversary would be to actually let you guys know a little more about me in fact-form, so I hope i'm not too boring for you all and you enjoy hearing some personal things!

1) I'm extremely Yorkshire. Cooplands, gravy, coal mines, sheep. Yep. You can take the girl out of Yorkshire but you can't take Yorkshire out of the girl.

2) I've travelled 80% of the world - all the way to the Caribbean and back, but never been to Cornwall.

3) Cheeseburgers are my favourite things in my world.

4) Although fashion has been my dream career since the age of 3 (when I used to sketch wedding dresses), I got so obsessed with CSI in my early teens that I wanted to go into criminology and forensics. I'm an actual loser... I also went through a marine biology phase...

5) As a kid I did every extra-curricular activity you can possibly think of - swimming, taekwondo, drama, ballet, modern dance, tennis, badminton, netball, basketball, rounders.... And I thought I hated sports!

6) I used to be in a wheelchair for a year or two after being run over by a car. Tragic times! I completely snapped my leg and had to have bars in there to hold it together while it healed.. Waa! I still have a bend in my leg where it snapped and some scars where the holes were and a very swollen ankle, but I was blessed with pretty decent legs so it balances the imperfections out haha!

7) I'm a bit of a loner, I tend to just work and work and work and in fashion everyone is always busy, so I generally spend all of my free time blogging or having movie marathons with my buddies Ben and Jerry!

8) My ultimate favourite movie is Pulp Fiction. I am a massive Quentin Tarantino fan, I know a lot of people don't understand his movies but I think my top 5 movies would just consist of his.

9) If I was a boy, my mum was going to call me Josh. Josh Rogan. She's not the brightest crayon in the box, bless 'er!

10) I was born on the exact same day as Miley Cyrus, we're obviously twins separated at birth (I wish...)

11) My imaginary friend as a child was Tommy the white ranger from The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers... I was pretty obsessed with him. My mum caught me writing 'I love Tommy' on the back of the sofa once. I was like 3 though so don't judge me haha!

12) I'm the kind of person that will jump around triple grates....

13) I LOVE UFC. (Brb, checking i'm still a girl...)

14) My general day-to-day playlist consists of Alesso, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello, Martin Garrix, Nervo, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea, and Lana Del Rey.

15) I love to adventure. When I go on holiday i'm the least sunbathing type ever. I love jet-skiing, scuba diving, cave swimming, quading, hiking - anything but lazing around when a whole new world is at your feet!

16) My favourite TV show is The Vampire Diaries. I'm totally obsessed with anything vamp-like (except for True Blood which for some reason I refuse to watch)... This is closely followed by Nashville, Pretty Little Liars, Hart of Dixie and The Originals. Bit of a TV fanatic!

17) My ideal date is a take away (McDonalds would even do me!) and a movie night. My other half is very lucky that i'm so low-maintenance...

18) I have around 3 wardrobes worth of clothes, but I only wear about 30% of it and i'm too much of a hoarder to part with any of it.

19) My favourite place in the world is the Algarve, Portugal. I have been countless times on holiday and I can't seem to find friendlier people, or a happier place to be.

20) To say i'm such a massive fashionista, I only spend my money on food. I can't go a day without chocolate and will even go all the way to sainsburys just for sweet treats at night... I'm a fiend... Help me....

White out

Dress - c/o Fashion Union (here)
Sunnies - c/o Oasap (here)
Clutch - New Look
Shoes - Spy Love Buy (here)

This dress from Fashion Union has very quickly become my favourite dress this season. I love a bit of white. I love a bit of sports luxe. And I love a bit of organza panelling.
I've also grown accustomed to a good pair of sandals lately too - i'm not usually the sandal kind cos I hate feet and toes and they're all weird and stuff and i'm totally self conscious about my own because of the way I feel about general feet things, but I must say - this season, shoes are just perfecto. I'm loving all things holographic, cleated and chunky and the fact that this pair kind of cover your toes but are sandals at the same time is just perfect if you're a bit of a weirdo like me. And a bonus point for being tres comfy for the office....

Electric Feel

Dress - c/o Wal G (here)
Kimono - c/o Oasap (here)
Sunnies - c/o Oasap (here)
Bag - c/o House of Fraser
Shoes - River Island

At first, I didn't think this dress would suit me at all, it's not my typical style and not my usual colour (i.e. it's not pink...) so I was a little challenged, however as soon as I put it on, the first thing I thought it 'wow, this dress is perfect!'. It's the ideal dress for dressing up and down, and would be perfect for a date night or a day-to-night event and I can't wait for it to have a permanent spot in my summer wardrobe. As for the kimono, I never had one before so I thought maybe it was time to jump on the whole bandwagon thing, since they are after all the perfect summer cover-up and one thing's for sure is that the British weather is ready for that kind of look!
I spent my afternoon in the beer garden with my fellow blogger and photographer Annabel from Adorned in Monochrome which was the perfect opportunity to wind down since i've not done that for a while due to working so much, so actually socialising for a change took down the craziness a notch. The Fashion Wonderland just never stops!

NEW LOOK A/W14 #NLAW14

If there's one thing I don't like to miss, it's a New Look event. The team are the best and every season they just get better and better, and it's so good to get a sneak peak of that before it hits stores (so I can compile my wish list and snatch it all up fast, duh).
On Wednesday, I scurried from the office to New Look's press space and the first thing I saw was that beautiful felted raspberry coat that I swear was whispering 'Laura, i'm yours!'. I think they've done a perfect job of updating everybody's favourite A/W piece and if you want it, you can form an orderly line right behind me next season!
Now, you all know me. I'm a sucker for anything pink. I don't intentionally plan to have the wardrobe of Barbie - but when things are all sparkly and pink what can a girl do? By the looks of things, there are definitely plenty of Spice Girls-esque sparkles to go around next season, and that cami slip is my personal fave.

HOUSE OF FRASER A/W 14

It's well and truly press day season, and another one I stopped by recently was the House of Fraser A/W preview. I love House of Fraser for many reasons, I think they stock some amazing brands so it was really great to have a little sneak peak as well as losing my Macaroon virginity (let me just say I am officially addicted...)
If there's anything you can expect from this years A/W season, it's relaxed tailoring and the return of pastel pink (in the form of that ridiculously gorgeous Lipsy fur jacket!) - and accompanying the pink is a new sprinkling of poppy red - it's going to be colourful fur galore!
